Item #1879
W.T.B. Sterling Pony Banjo, c. 1890's, made in USA, natural varnish finish, spunover rim, mahogany neck.
An interesting small 19th century banjo. Fingerboard is fretted to the 17th fret; above that bears an inlaid grained ivoroid disc inscribed "W.T.B. Sterling trade mark".
Very early metal and celluloid friction tuners stamped "pat.pend'g"; early Elite tailpiece.
Well-made with a Stewart-like spunover rim.
Overall length is 29 in. (73.7 cm.), 8 1/4 in. (21 cm.) diameter head, and 2 5/16 in. (5.9 cm.) deep. Scale length is 20 1/2 in. (521 mm.).
Well-played, with most hooks having lost plating and down to muted brass color; most nuts original, with a couple mismatched.
Fingerboard is well worn in lower positions, showing some signs of added finish. Pot and neck have average wear. Set up with an ancient (possibly period) skin head with one small patch on back.
Great patina overall. Plays well with nylon strings. Very Good + Condition.
