Item #6475
Washburn Style A Grand Concert Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1922), made in Chicago, natural varnish with stenciling finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, black hard shell case.
The Washburn Style A (also called the "Deluxe") was the top-of-the-line, finest guitar Lyon & Healy offered in the early 1920's- the height of the company's accomplishment in conventional 6-string design. This is an X-braced, rosewood body Grand Concert Guitar built with the finest materials available, to a very high standard only equaled by Martin and the Larson brothers. The sides are 3-ply rosewood, an innovation Lyon & Healy were particularly proud of; the back is 2-piece rosewood and the top solid "selected' spruce. When introduced in 1922 the Style A was offered from stock only in concert size; this Grand Concert model was originally a special order item, as noted in the catalog. In either size it was an extremely high-grade instrument, selling originally for $127.00-the same range as a pearl-bordered Martin Style 45.
The spruce top is decorated with gold leaf stencil and bound with 3-ply ivoroid on both the upper and side edges. The "smile" bridge and ivoroid-capped soundhole are uniquely styled, new features exclusive to the Washburns of this period. The headstock face is single bound with a lovely engraved rose pearl inlay, a lovely feature that only lasted a few years. This guitar is a fine player's example of the seldom-seen larger body version of this rare and lovely pre-war flat top.
Overall length is 38 3/16 in. (97 cm.), 14 3/16 in. (36 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). This guitar has some wear and old repair work but remains in excellent playing condition with a recent refret (with period style wire) and new properly styled but oversize "smile" bridge. This guitar does have some older repair including an area of the top on the upper bass bout that has a fairly noticeable reconstruction, solid but visible. There is wear overall and a lot of checking to the back varnish, and some dings to the top and sides. The tuners are new repro engraved Waverly style, quite appropriate to the guitar's aesthetic. The bridge and bridgeplate are designed to handle very light steel strings, and the instrument has an excellent sound with a very even response. Overall Very Good + Condition.
