Item #4286
National Style 1 Tricone Roundneck Model Resophonic Guitar (1928), made in Los Angeles, California, German Silver finish, German silver body; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
One of the classic-and most distinctive-guitar designs of all time, the National Tricone is currently enjoying renewed respect and popularity. Widely considered the finest acoustic instrument ever created for slide playing, the roundneck "Spanish" Tricone is also an excellent and totally unique-sounding guitar for many other styles of play. The round neck Tricone is considerably rarer then the square neck "Hawaiian" variant and has long been sought after as the ultimate acoustic blues/slide guitar.
This particular Style 1 is from 1928, built when the Tricones were National's only product line and predating the introduction of the much cheaper- single cone resonator designs. The "plain" Style 1 retailed for $125.00 in that year, a tremendous sum even at the height of the roaring '20's. This guitar is not a very original example but remains an excellent playing instrument suitable for both open-tuned slide and regular Spanish play with the rich sound only Tricones can produce. The Style 1 with the unengraved body is the 'purest' example of National's Art Deco aesthetic, and mysteriously often seems to be the best sounding as well, although there is no scientific reason why that should be!
Overall length is 38 3/4 in. (98.4 cm.), 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 1/8 in. (7.9 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). This guitar has seen a lot of re-building some time in the past, it is a very good player but not as original as we prefer. The neck is re-finished, and there is a replacement rosewood fingrboard, tuners, decal and nut. There is an old heel repair, and an extra metal and wood attachment inside the body under the dowel stick acting as a further neck stabilizer. The cones are older but not original, and there is some sort of overlay on the floor of the cone well, probably as a damper. The body and plating are original and in good overall condition, with some dings and plating wear. The tailpiece is an early style with the "ball' string guides but may not be original to the guitar. The guitar has a good smooth sound, not as loud as some but clean and well-balanced. Overall Very Good + Condition.
