Item #4119
Royal Hawaiian Model Soprano Ukulele, most likely made by Kumalae, c. 1920, made in Hawaii, natural varnish finish, koa wood body and neck.
These "Royal Hawaiian" ukes were made by the top local manufacturers for sale at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu as souvenirs in the early days of tourism in Hawaii. This one gives every indication of being built by Kumalae and is a high-grade uke, unlike the "tourist" models built in later years. A nice period Hawaiian uke that plays and sounds very well.
Overall length is 20 1/2 in. (52.1 cm.), 6 1/4 in. (15.9 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 5/16 in. (5.9 cm.) high. Scale length is 13 1/2 in. (343 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.).
Some general play wear and two repaired grain cracks to the back; overall a nice-playing and sounding early Hawaiian uke. Excellent Condition.
