Item #6440
Guild S-50 Jet Star Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1964), made in Hoboken, NJ, serial # 36010, cherry lacquer finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.
One of the comparatively forgotten solidbodies of the 1960's, the Guild Jet-Star is a still waiting to be discovered. This model was the lowest model of Guild's 1960's solidbody line, under the flashy (and now highly collectible) S-200 Thunderbird and the similar two-pickup S-100. The body is a substantial chunk of carved mahogany, with the scoop at the bottom to form the "feet" for the built in stand that-thankfully-the S-50 omitted. The S-50 has only one of the same metal-covered pickups as the S-100, peculiar to this guitar and a few others and one of Guild's best sounding PU options.
The headstock is the eccentric off-center peak shape shared with the Thunderbird but the rosewood fingerboard is unbound with simple dot inlay. The neck is a fairly chunky feeling piece of mahogany. An odd metal integral bridge and tailpiece unit is also featured-unique to this guitar- along with Grover Sta-tite individual tuners. The S-50 is an slightly eccentric but great-feeling, eminently playable 60's guitar with a great trash, twang and thunder tone.
Overall length is 38 1/8 in. (96.8 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Moderate wear overall; appears all original except for the strap buttons and the knobs, which are the correct style repro. There are some small chips and dings but no large areas of finish loss; there is a faint sticker mark on the face on the lower bass bout. This is a very solid-feeling and good sounding guitar; sonically limited perhaps with its single mid-position pickup but with plenty of crunch when cranked. Overall Excellent - Condition.
