Gretsch G-6120T SW Steve Wariner Nashville Gentleman Model Hollow Body Electric Guitar (2022), made in Japan, serial # JT22031102, black lacquer with sparkles finish, laminated maple body, laminated maple neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
This Gretsch "Nashville Gentleman" Steve Wariner Signature model is effectively a modern update on the classic Chet Atkins 6120 models with some interesting variations. The 15 3/4" wide, 2 5/8" a single-cutaway deep hollow body has a solid top with simulated F-holes, a combination of elements not used on any vintage 6120 version. The jet-black-with-sparkles finish (Magic Black" in Gretsch parlance) almost seems like a nod to 1960's sparkly Silvertone guitars; it offers a new look with a subtle flash factor. This is set off by gleaming gold hardware, aged white binding with black and white purfling, and a gold Plexi pickguard with black Gretsch logo and signpost graphic featuring Steve Wariner's signature where Chet's used to be. A gold nameplate adorns the multi-bound headstock as well.
Sonically, a lot of thought went into the design of this guitar. The TV Jones TV Classic Plus bridge pickup and a TV Jones Paul Yandell Duo-Tron neck pickup were paired together specially for this model. Designed with finger-picking styles in mind, the Duo-Tron has blades instead of polepieces for the treble strings, resulting in fuller, bolder tone that is more rounded and focused. These pickups can be flexibly harnessed, combined via the traditional three-way toggle with a simplified wiring scheme: a master volume set on the cutaway bout and a master tone control farther aft with a push-pull pot allowing coil splitting.
The 12"-radius bound ebony fingerboard has aged mother of pearl Neo-Classic thumbnail inlays and 22 medium jumbo frets sitting atop a laminated maple neck with a standard "U" profile and 25" scale length. The Bigsby B6GP String-Thru tailpiece is mated to a pinned vintage Atkins-style Tru-Arc brass rocking bar bridge and a brass nut.
Steve Wariner's signature instrument offers classic Gretsch style with a flexible menu of twang in honor of the player who inspired it. A Grand Ole Opry and Kentucky Music Hall of Fame Member, Wariner is one of only five guitar players ever bestowed with the "Certified Guitar Player" award by Chet Atkins himself. Wariner is a four-time Grammy-award winner and has released 19 studio albums scoring more than 50 charted Billboard singles. He's also a heck of a nice guy and we are extremely pleased to see this signature Gretsch model honoring him.
Overall length is 42 3/8 in. (107.6 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 5/8 in. (6.7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This guitar looks only very lightly played, with a few scuffs and handling marks overall but no really notable wear except minor scuffing on the headstock from a clip-on tuner being mounted there. The bridge top and Bigsby have light wear from hand contact. This is a very cool looking and fine sounding modern Gretsch, a nice extension of the company's long association with Chet Atkins through this endorsement by one of his premier acolytes. It is an excellent sounding and playing instrument, complete in the original hard case with a passel of Gretsch paperwork. Overall Excellent + Condition.
