Item #5652
Gibson Style A-1 Model Carved Top Mandolin (1918), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, natural top, cherry stained back and sides finish, birch back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
Overall length is 26 in. (66 cm.), 10 1/4 in. (26 cm.) width, and 1 7/8 in. (4.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.).
A slightly worn but very solid old pumpkin-top, well-used but not abused. It is all original except the celluloid pickguard which is missing and evidently disintegrated long ago, leaving some staining to the top and the case interior. The finish has an old thin clear overspray on the top, back and sides. There is evidence of re-sealing to some of the back/side join, as is very common on these instruments. The hardware is complete and original except the missing 'guard; the mandolin has some general wear overall but is a good-sounding example, complete with a solid OHSC. Very Good + Condition.
