Item #2605

Gibson SG Special Model Solid Body Electric Guitar, c. 1965, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, cherry lacquer finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black tolex original chipboard case.

A great-playing SG Special with a bit of a mysteryalthough it appears to be a 1965 guitar (the pots in a wiring rig that appears untouched are dated '65), it bears a four-digit serial number (in smaller than normal numbers) which would normally date it to 1961. The neck contour and joint look like a 1964-5 guitar, but the instrument is a factory stoptail (very rare by 1965). The tuners are proper period strip double-line enclosed plastic-button Klusonsbut it's also carried a set of individual Kluson Deluxesand the marks of both types are deep into the paint! The bridge is chrome; the studs are nickel.

Our best guess is that this might be a warranty "repair" with a basically new guitar for a '61 SG damaged and sent back through a dealer in 1965. Whatever the story, it's a wonderful guitar, light and extremely resonant with the classic P-90 snarl.

Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/4 in. (3.2 cm.) deep. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.).

Very nice original condition. Several small dings to the top finish; a small area of finish on the bottom edge of the body near the strap button has peeled, probably from moisture. One worn-away spot on top body horn from rubbing the case handle anchors. Neck finish and frets nearly perfect, color very bright and unfaded.

Case is functional with some separation of the covering. Excellent Condition.
