Item #4850
Gibson SG Special Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1962), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Polaris White lacquer finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
One of Gibson's sharpest looking -and sounding- Rock & Roll guitars from the early '60's, the SG Special in white remains a favorite of both players and collectors. This example has all the coolest features-it's a stoptail without a vibrato, which makes for more flexible playability and it carries the rarer Polaris white finish, the '60's descendant of the 50's limed mahogany "TV" livery. With two P-90 pickups and a bound fingerboard, the SG Special is a step-up from the bare-bones Junior, offering the same rampaging sound with a wider spectrum of tonal options.
The striking solid white finish was a catalog option, but in 1962 (the first year that separate shipping totals were logged) was used on only about 1/4 of the Specials shipped, making nice examples somewhat difficult to find. SG Specials were favorites of many '60's and '70's players including Carlos Santana and Robby Krieger, but this white version is now most visible as the signature instrument of "Derek St Hubbins" of Spinal Tap! This is a wonderful guitar, one of the nicest SG's we've seen in a while.
Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). A very nice, clean original guitar. No repairs or modifications; some light overall play wear, wear to the lower edges and a couple of chips to the finish, which has curdled to a slightly yellowish hue in spots. An extremely fine player and a very solid collectible Gibson, with the original deluxe yellow-lined HSC. Excellent Condition.
