Gibson LG-2 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1945, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back, sides and neck; spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, original black chipboard case.
Here is a very attractive example of the celebrated "banner" LG-2, so-called for its headstock decoration reading "Only A Gibson is Good Enough". This model represents the earliest appearance of the long-lived "LG" series of small-bodied Gibson flattops, which replaced the earlier L-00 style instruments during the war. These WWII-era LG-2's are known for their large neck profiles; many were built with only wood neck re-inforcement due to wartime restrictions on metal use but this example has a standard Gibson truss rod. The tuners are the original wartime Klusons in excellent condition, and indeed the guitar overall appears not to have seen much use over the last 70 years. The 1940's loss is today's gain, as this one is a great playing guitar with a big ringing tone.
Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/16 in. (11.3 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). This is a super clean guitar overall, with only some very light finish wear. The original lacquer still shines and the sunburst on the top is still very deep and unfaded. The guitar has recently had a neckset and very accurate replica bridge. The only notable repair is a solid and clean crack reseal just visible on the treble side of the heel which is only noticeable on close inspection. An excellent player with a bright and powerful sound, complate with a lovely original pre-war style SSC. Excellent Condition.
