Gibson LG-2 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1944), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 642 (FON), sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

Here is a fine example of the celebrated "banner" LG-2, so-called for its headstock decoration reading "Only A Gibson is Good Enough". This is the earliest appearance of the long-lived "LG" series of small-bodied Gibson flattops, which replaced the earlier L-00 style instruments during the war. These WWII-era LG-2's are known for their large neck profiles; many were built with only wood neck re-inforcement due to wartime restrictions on metal use but this example has a standard Gibson truss rod and a fairly slim neck (by 1940's standards!)

The Tuners are the original wartime Klusons in excellent condition, and indeed the guitar overall appears not to have seen extensive use. The 1940's loss is today's gain, as this one is a great sounding and playing guitar with a big ringing tone.

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). Overall a very nice clean and original guitar. There have been a few repairs-a long center back crack has been cleanly re-sealed, and there are several small closed grain splits to the top off the soundhole by the fingerboard and pickguard, all very neatly done. The bridge appears to have been cleanly re-glued long ago, and the neck has been very nicely reset. Very nice finish overall, shinier than many period Gibsons with virtually no fade. An excellent player, with a very big and fairly bright tone. One of the nicer Banner-head LG's we have had, and certainly one of the cleanest! Overall Excellent Condition.
