Gibson Les Paul Model Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1954), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, gold and natural lacquer finish, mahogany body with maple cap, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown hard shell case.

This 1954 Les Paul Model is the second variation of Gibson's all-time classic solidbody, with the much more player-friendly stop tailpiece replacing the earlier "Les Paul" trapeze the model was introduced with. Typical features include the proprietary gold top finish with natural mahogany back and sides, bound rosewood fingerboard and pearloid trapezoid inlays. In an idiosyncratic touch, the pearl Gibson logo is set lower down on the headstock than later 50's models. The original single-ring Kluson Deluxe tuning machines have the typical "tulip" buttons. Other appointments are the amber "hat box" knobs and toggle with cream plastic surround and two P-90 pickups with original cream colored covers and center-mount screws.

From the first year Gibson's improved "stoptail" Les Paul, this is a much more useable guitar than a 1952 or '53 with the strings mounted under the trapeze bar. This is a fine player's example of these revolutionary guitar-there were just over 1500 of these exceptional instruments sold in 1954, and many have survived in far less original condition this one The first solidbodies with the class of a Gibson, these guitars convinced many players to lay down their electrified archtops. Later developments of the Les Paul line included the upscale Custom, downmarket Special and Junior and reworked Standard in gold and sunburst, but this is the guitar that started it all.

Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 15/16 in. (4.9 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This is a GREAT playing and sounding '54 stoptail Goldtop we'd call a "minor issues" guitar, with a serious vibe. The pickups, wiring, caps and pots are all original; as are the bridge, pickguard, knobs and tuners. The switch tip, jackplate and strap buttons are repro parts. Excellent '54 style sharper neck angle, so there is plenty of room under the tailpiece for any action required. There appears to be a very old overspray on the back of the headstock, down to around the third fret area. The inked-on serial number is intact. We have examined the area under every sort of light imaginable and there is no visible evidence of any break or repair, so we can't tell why this was done. There are some small areas of touched up paint on the gold top, nest notably behind the bridge where it looks like an intonateable Badass bridge was fitted at some point causing some scraping as the strings were changed. Some typical belt buckle wear to the back, there are some dings and chips in various spots but overall the finish is not heavily worn. Simply a fine '50's Les Paul with all the tone magic these early Goldtops are famous for! Excellent - Condition.
