Item #5503

Gibson J-50 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1950), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.

Gibson's slope-shouldered Jumbo guitars have been very popular since the 1940's with Folk, Blues and Pop players and picking this one up it's easy to see why. This is a very comfortable guitar with a sleek, round neck and a big sound. This 1950 example has seen some repair work but remains an excellent example. The J-50 is essentially the same instrument as the J-45 with a natural finish and an extra layer of top binding. Over the years they have proven are a bit rarer (they cost slightly more) than that familiar sunburst-top favorite. The J-50 was favored notably by Texas blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins, among many others!

Overall length is 40 1/2 in. (102.9 cm.), 16 1/8 in. (41 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/8 in. (12.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This is an excellent gigging J-50- a recent neck set, refret and new saddle make this a particularly good player. There are a number of repairs but overall a very attractive guitar. The back has a number of cracks around the edges and the backstrip has been replaced; there is one new back brace as well. The bridge is original but has been reglued (likely more than once) and the bridgeplate is a correct maple replacement. The top is crack free and overall the finish is well preserved without major wear. Tuners are new repro Kluson Deluxe. Overall a good bargain in a 60+ year old Gibson Jumbo and a very fine sounding, easy playing guitar. Overall Very Good + Condition.
