Item #4634
Gibson F-2 Model Carved Top Mandolin (1916), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 35669, sunburst top, dark cherry stained back and sides finish, birch back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
Overall length is 26 1/8 in. (66.4 cm.), 10 in. (25.4 cm.) width, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.). A beautiful sounding mandolin; this F-2 has had some wear and repair work overall, currently missing the pickguard but otherwise original and complete. There is a repaired top crack on the bass side of the top about 1/2" from the fingerboard and some attendant polish-out, including a bit of lost finish on the crest of the scroll. There is an area pickwear on the treble side of the soundhole; the top has had an old French polish overcoat that is a bit shiny-very thin but noticeable. All other finish is the original varnish, with the only major loss on the back of the neck, where a decent amount is rubbed away. Overall this is well played but very sweet and enjoyable mandolin with a most comfortable action. Includes a nice OHSC. Generally Excellent - Condition.
