Gibson's recent "VOS" series are very well done reproductions of their original classic instruments; this re-issue of the ES-335 from 60 years ago promoted with the line "The Sweet Sound of '64". Gibson goes on: "The Historic Reissue ES-335 is back better than ever thanks to a year of studying, scanning, and listening to original examples. The expert craftspeople at Gibson Custom Shop have rendered every contour, profile, inlay and color of the priceless vintage models in magnificent detail. The 1964 Reissue models utilize sharp horn cutaways, medium C-shape neck profiles scanned from originals, small block inlays and vintage-replica parts, finished in Nitrocellulose VOS "Vintage Patina".
Having had a number of originals we can agree this this guitar is an excellent modern version of the classic ES-335 from 1964, in a striking black finish that would have been a VERY unusual custom order at the time. The hardware is generally an accurate reproduction of the original 1964 parts, including Gibson's modern vintage 60s styled humbucking pickups. The round profile neck is quite chunky as some '64's are, and this is an excellent playing and sounding instrument, evidence of Gibson putting some serious effort into re-creating their more sought-after originals.
Overall length is 41 3/8 in. (105.1 cm.), 15 15/16 in. (40.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
This ebony beauty is only a couple of years old and appears to have been lightly played remaining all original and well-cared for. It shows very little wear to the finish, just some general scuffing overall. The nickel plating has started to age just like the originals do. This is a very striking looking guitar in this black finish and an excellent player with the chunkier '64-style neck and original frets still in excellent shape. It includes the original black Tolex HSC with the pocket full of original hangtags and paperwork. Excellent Condition.
