Item #1396
Gibson A-4 Model Carved Top Mandolin (1920), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, cherry sunburst finish, spruce top, birch body, mahogany neck, black tolex original hard shell case.
This A-4 was factory refinished by Gibson in 1971; the color is an attractive cherry with a sunburst top which looks not unlike a cross between 1960's and 1920's finishes. The original invoice from Gibson for the job is still included.
The pickguard and tailpiece cover are missing; one-piece compensated bridge and tuners are original. This mandolin plays and sounds excellent. A nice example of a good-playing A4 priced considerably lower than an all-original instrument.
Overall length is 26 in. (66 cm.), 10 1/4 in. (26 cm.) wide, and 1 7/8 in. (4.8 cm.) in depth at side. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.).
Several repaired top cracks under the finish, almost no newer wear since the refinish. Original green-lined HSC very well-preserved with the original key and an added removable felt pad included.
