Item #3261

Fender Precision Bass Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1965), made in Fullerton, California, sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

One of the nicest 1960's Precisions we have ever seen and a spectacularly well-preserved example of the earliest CBS-era Fender Bass. This bass is 100% original, not a screw changed, including the Fender flatwound strings. It has seen very little play time; in fact, it has probably never seen the inside of a bar or club!

This has all the typical features of a "transition" bass from the period when CBS had just bought the Fender companylate "L" series #, pearl fingerboard dots, silver transition logo, and the 4-layer plastic (as opposed to nitrocellulose) tortoise pattern pickguard. It plays and sounds spectacularly well and we can only wonder who bought this bass new in 1965 and then presumably never spent much time playing it! A true pleasure to handle and play and a wonderful time capsule piece.

Overall length is 46 in. (116.8 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).

We always hesitate to describe 40-year-old instruments as near mint, but this is the cleanest 60's Fender bass we've seen in a long time. Apart from one tiny nick on the side near the rear strap button and a few extremely miniscule finish pulls exposed by the shrinking pickguard, the finish is amazingly well preserved. There are a few tiny dings and some buckle -- more likely shirt-button -- marks into, but not through, the finish. All right, call it Excellent+++!

At any rate, this is a fabulous find and an absolute collector-quality Fender bass. Great sounding and playing as well as immaculately well-preserved. Includes the very fine original no-logo case -- ask about the smell! If only we could bottle the "Eau De Fendeur"
