Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Fullerton, California, Daphne Blue lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, brown hard shell case.
This is a very attractive and extremely well-preserved 1965 Fender Mustang, made less than a year after the model's debut in the second half of 1964. The Mustang was Fender's classiest student guitar, basically a Duo-Sonic with the new "Dynamic vibrato" tailpiece and a floating bridge. The model was instantly successful and has proved a timeless favorite of countless garage bands from the 1960s and '70s until today.
The body on this example sports a lovely blue lacquer finish with very little fade and the pickguard is laminated plastic with a white pearloid top layer. The L-series serial number dates to the first half of 1965 with the pots coded to the 12th week of that year. The early Mustang remains an American classic and still a great deal in an original 1960s Fender guitar!
Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This Mustang remains in superb original condition overall, with no repairs or alterations. There are some small finish scuffs, chips, and dings, mostly on the edges, but really this is a very clean guitar for 50+ years on. There is no belt-buckle wear on the back, hardly any neck or fret wear, and all the hardware is intact and complete including the oft-missing vibrato arm and bridge cover, which has a bit of plating loss. A very fine-playing and sounding Mustang, set up with flatwounds like it was still 1965 and including an interesting period jobber-brand HSC covered in maroon Tolex! Excellent + Condition.
