Item #4955
Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1964), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L35611, Daphne Blue lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown hard shell case.
This is a very early Mustang; one of the oldest we have seen. The guitar was introduced in mid-'64 as a student guitar with a tremolo unit and the existing Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic were re-styled to match. It is rare to find a true "Pre-CBS" version of this guitar but here it is complete with clay dot fingerboard and neck dated September 1964. Beautiful original Daphne blue finished body, with the actual Fender custom-color style clear overcoat, an extra step soon omitted on these budget instruments. Short scale neck, white pearloid pickguard, two pickups and the then newly-designed Mustang switching system which allows different phase combinations on the pickups. A really neat example of Fender's classic '60's student electric Spanish guitar.
Overall length is 38 1/8 in. (96.8 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 22 1/2 in. (572 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/2 in. (38 mm.). All original; some finish chipping (mostly to the edges) and a wear spot on the control panel under the volume knob (someone turned it a lot!). A really nice playing and sounding early Mustang, complete with a rare original cream cloth-covered case. Excellent Condition.
