Item #3471

Epiphone Banjo Ukulele, c. 1927, made in Long Island City, NY, natural lacquer finish, maple neck and rim.

A really fantastic sounding and beautifully-made, if relatively plain-looking, banjo-uke. Very heavy full machined metal tonering/flange assembly on maple rim with bottom capping; wide flat fingerboard with tiny pearl dot inlay topped with typical Epiphone "paddle" veneered headstock. The neck is laminated maple with a centerstrip and two-piece heelcap.

This instrument was made not long after the Staphopolo operation moved to Long Island City in 1925, on the path to becoming one of the nation's greatest instrument builders. This is the banjo-uke equivalent to the highly regarded Epiphone Recording Banjo line, and is extremely high quality throughout. Very loud and powerful-sounding, this instrument could easily hold its own in a small jazz band!

Overall length is 22 3/4 in. (57.8 cm.), 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm.) diameter head, and 2 1/2 in. (6.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/16 in. (33 mm.).

Very nice original condition overall, including the bridge, grover tailpiece, and old skin head. While the tuners are the correct original style, the instrument appears to have had two-tab Grover geared pags fitted at one point; the back of the headstock has had the small screwholes filled and has been polished out, resulting in the loss of most of the original decal. One shrinkage crack to the end of the fingerboard and quite a few in the bottom rim capping; all solid and stable. A fantastic-playing and sounding instrument and easily one of the best banjo-ukes ever made. Excellent Condition.
