C. F. Martin Style 1 Model Soprano Ukulele, c. 1922, made in Nazareth, PA, dark mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard.

A nice example of an early-1920's Martin Style 1 ukulele. Although these were a fairly inexpensive instrument (originally retailing in the $14.00 range) they are built to the highest Martin 1920's standard and are considered amongst the best sounding and playing ukuleles ever manufactured. The Style 1 is simple with a natural mahogany finish and no ornament beyond 3-ply top binding and soundhole ring but has as powerful and beautiful tone.

Overall length is 20 5/8 in. (52.4 cm.), 6 1/4 in. (15.9 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 5/8 in. (346 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.). Very nice overall with some light typical wear; one small sealed crack on the back near the heelblock, a repeired grain crack nearby and an equally inconspicuous side crack. No other visible repairs. An excellent player; all original except fitted with the new Pohaku internally geared tuning pegs which are a wonderful innovation for these old wooden peg Martins as they allow for much more accurate tuning with no alteration to the instrument. Spectacular sounding; we feel these early Martins are consistently the best-toned ukuleles we know of and this one is certainly no exception. Excellent - Condition.
