C. F. Martin D-28 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1967), made in Nazareth, PA, natural lacquer finish, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

This is a good player's example of a mid-1960's C.F. Martin D-28 Dreadnought, one that has seen some action but remains one of the most iconic of all flat top guitars. This D-28 was built in the period when the Martin company had experienced years of tremendous growth due to the popularity of Martin instruments during the contemporary folk revival. The company responded by ramping up as much as possible, including moving into a huge new factory in 1964. Still Martins were essentially hand-built instruments by modern standards, and indisputable the finest flat-tops available.

This guitar shows typical period features including a nicely ambered natural lacquer finished spruce top with 6-ply celluloid binding around, a short-saddle ebony bridge, black pickguard and multi-ply soundhole rings. The mahogany neck has an ebony fretboard with mother of pearl dot markers graduating in size. The rounded-corner headstock (typical of this era, when Martin's templates were heavily worn) carries original PAT. PEND. Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.

The Brazilian rosewood back and sides show a lovely grained figure, most visibly on the back just off the center seam which is decorated by a wide chain-link pattern back strip. Brazilian rosewood is currently virtually unavailable for commercial use in guitar building; a substantial premium is attributed to the desirability of Martins on the current market that were constructed with it. Despite some repair work this is a fine sounding and playing period D-28, an excellent gigging example of this always highly sought-after guitar.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 5 in. (12.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This guitar shows signs of several noticeable repairs but remains largely original and in fine playing condition. Overall the finish shows only fairly light wear, most notably to the top around the edge of the soundhole. The back of the neck shows only minor dings with the finish worn down a bit. The short-saddle ebony bridge and black pickguard appear original and unaltered. There are repaired areas including cracks in the rosewood lower treble bout back, which has an area of impact damage with several grain cracks running off it. This is fairly cleanly repaired but visible, with some finish buffing and touch-up but no large overspray. There are also a couple of tightly sealed grain cracks to the treble side. The spruce top shows a decent size area of repaired cracks where the player's arm crosses the top, solid but not particularly neatly rebuilt. There is some visible glue spotting but again no overspray; a few tiny pieces of spruce were never filled in but all is solid.

The back of the headstock shows a fairly cleanly repaired crack that went around the lower edge of the diamond up into the center back of the peghead, again well repaired but not to contemporary standards od neatness. The neck has been reset solidly but again not quite to the preferred neatness level of contemporary standards. It appears the guitar had at least one impact incident long ago-all this repair work looks to have been done quite some time back. Ironically the original case has a large "Fragile" stencil on the top, perhaps added after whatever unfortunate event this guitar endured. The original owner's name and social security number are neatly engraved on the back of the peghead. Despite this perhaps checkered history and subsequent restoration this D-28 remains bloodied but unbowed, a fine player's instrument. A joy to strum and pick with a great sound, this 1960's veteran guitar survives proudly, a fine value in a player's Brazilian rosewood Dreadnought. Overall Very Good + Condition.
