C. F. Martin 5-18 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1956), Nazareth, PA.
The model 5-18 is Martin's entry into the all-time cutest guitar sweepstakes and this example is exceptional in that regard, as it also features fantastic folk art painted decoration on the top, back and headstock. Despite its diminutive size the 5-18 is a very playable and good sounding instrument, with a bigger sound than one might expect. The "modern" (20th Century) 5-18 is based on Martin's 19th century terz guitar patterns, with an 11" body and very short scale at just over 21". With appeal beyond its obvious suitability for young students, the 5-18 was steadily produced-albeit in small numbers- for much of the 20th century. The guitar was a solid seller through the 1950's, averaging well over 100 units per year until 1959-175 left the factory in 1956. With a sparkling sound and unmatched portability, this littlest Martin remains a well regarded instrument today for travel, recording and even live use. Dolly Parton is a longtime fan, and has been seen with a 5-18 over the years. Marty Robbins was particularly fond of this model in the late 1950's and was often seen with one, sometimes strumming and sometimes paddling up an imaginary stream!
This guitar must have belonged to someone named "Tina" and was very carefully and skillfully decorated long ago in a folk art style. The headstock bears that name and filigree patterns on the side in gold and glitter paint, while the top and back have more extensive border decoration in floral patterns executed in gold and red. The back decoration includes a full border treatment, ceremonial eagle-with-banner in the top center and hearts at the base and heel. This is one of the loveliest owner-decorated guitars we have had, and makes for a delightful package of sight and sound.
Overall length is 33 1/8 in. (84.1 cm.), 11 1/4 in. (28.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 in. (10.2 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 21 1/4 in. (540 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). This is a fine-playing and sounding 5-18, well preserved including the decoration. It has had a clean neckset and a new saddle; the only other repair is a typical sealed pickguard crack in the usual spot under the B string. Whoever Tina was the guitar was played but well cared for, with some typical finish wear, mostly to the back. All old guitars have a story to tell, but this one is truly special-even if we can only imagine the details. Overall Excellent Condition.
