Item #5505
C. F. Martin 2-17 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1927), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 29257, natural mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
Overall length is 37 in. (94 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 in. (10.2 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/8 in. (619 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.). Not too much wear overall, just some light pickwear to the top and checking overall. The finish is a bit cloudy in some areas, not unusual from Martin instruments of this period when the company was still experimenting to get their lacquer spraying technique perfected after switching from hand applied finishes. The bridge has been re-glued neatly, and these are a couple of very small repaired cracks adjacent to it, in front of the B and more noticeable behind the high E string. The top has a typical slight belly but is very solid-this is typical of these very lightly built mahogany top guitars. The only other repairs are to several small (under 3") side cracks sealed but with minimal touch-up. Overall a very good playing and sounding example of Martin's budget steel-string guitar from the 1920's, with a bright sparkly tome and a surprising power. This model is most associated with Jimmy Rodgers, who played one of these $32.50 models before his Victor records successes enabled him to purchase the considerably more costly Custom 000-45 that became his trademark! Overall Excellent - Condition.
