C. F. Martin 0-28 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1921), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 16299, natural finish, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, Adirondack spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard and bridge, rosewood bound top, original black chipboard case.
This lovely Martin Style 0-28 guitar was built in 1921; over a century along it remains in solidly original condition, with some typical wear and older repair. Only 88 of this model were shipped that year, which was the 0-28s all-time production high to that point showing again what a small operation C.F.Martin & Co. was at the time. Martin guitars of this period are far more lightly built than later models, and many have succumbed to age and heavy use after 100+ years; often no longer in anything like this original condition.
In 1921 the 0-28 was priced at $60 (without the case) a fairly considerable sum at the time. The 13 1/2" wide body is made of close-grained Brazilian rosewood with an Adirondack spruce top braced in a very delicate scalloped X pattern. The top is bound with ivoroid and trimmed with herringbone pattern wood marquetry that is a longstanding Martin trademark, and the spruce has a bit of "Bearclaw" figure. The back is triple bound with an ivoroid outer layer and has a zipper pattern marquetry backstrip. The small pyramid bridge is very high-grade dark ebony.
The mahogany neck has an ebony fingerboard fitted with original bar frets and inlaid with small notched diamond position markers. The slotted headstock is faced in rosewood and carries engraved Handel strip tuners with ivoroid buttons. The C.F. Martin stamp is visible on the back of the headstock and inside the body on the backstrip. This model would be built in this form until the advent of 14-fret neck joints, pickguards, and belly bridges in the early 1930s. Instruments of this type and period are relatively scarce in good playable condition; this example predates the model being built in steel string format but holds silk and steel strings fine and sounds fabulous.
This small-bodied Martin is not pristine, but remains in better condition than many of this period and a fine playing and sounding 12-fret guitar. Although the priced put this model around the middle of the company's line the 0-28 was still more expensive than most early 1920s guitars, and always built to the lofty standards that only C.F. Martin ever sustained. Although not a dedicated steel-string guitar this is still a superb instrument for many styles of play.
Overall length is 38 in. (96.5 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.).
This 0-28 shows some well-executed repair work and fairly minor wear but remains in substantially original condition. The original very thin finish on the body had an equally thin overcoat added long ago; most of the visible wear marks are through this layer. The neck finish remains fully original with only light wear. There hardly any play wear to the top which is pretty unusual for a flat-top from this period. There are some very small, scuffs, scratches and press marks overall, but really not too much wear for a Century + on earth.
The most notable repair is a split through the endpin and tailblock; this is visible externally under the overfinish (probably the reason it was done). Internally there is a neat mahogany patch over the end block and two small vertical bars of mahogany added to reinforce the sides just outside of the block; this work was very neatly done. There are several grain cracks to the lower back all sealed but not cleated. The top is crack free; internally the original delicate scalloped braces and very small maple bridgeplate remain intact.
The guitar has had a clean neck reset for optimum playability. Three small rectangular cleats were added under fingerboard extension, likely as part of the neck reset process. The original ebony bridge has been reglued, shaved slightly on the treble side with the saddle slot filled and recut for a new compensated bone saddle to improve intonation. The area of the top around the bridge has light scarring from this. The original bar frets have been crowned down somewhat but have plenty of life left. The beautiful original tuners remain intact and fully functional.
This 0-28 is in excellent playing order, with a more powerful sound than most players would expect from this small-bodied technically gut string instrument. Truly a century-old gem still housed in a rare original purple lined hard heavy chipboard case, a new product at the time. This in decent condition overall and still functional for light use. Overall Very Good + Condition.
