wm-lange-banner-blue-banjo-ukulele-1928-8256
Wm. Lange Banner Blue Banjo Ukulele (1928)
Banner Blue Model Banjo Ukulele, made by Wm. Lange, c. 1928, made in New York City, natural lacquer finish, mahogany neck, rim and resonator, pearloid fingerboard and headstock, gig bag case.

This flashy full resonator banjo-ukulele is a product of Wm. Lange's New York factory, and is in many ways built like a miniature Paramount banjo. The Banner Blue logo stenciled in blue on the headstock is one of a number of names found on Lange-made banjos in the 1920s, and though these are often budget instruments this little 4-string is actually rather fancy. The fingerboard and fancy shaped headstock are faced in striking grey pearloid, while the rest of the instrument is finished in natural mahogany with nickel-plated hardware.

The construction is very solid throughout, with a heavy hoop, Paramount hooks and nuts, and a bracket band around the body. The side of the rim has a marquetry strip inlaid, and the resonator has the same pattern on the top rim and several other decorative wood inlay strips.

The neck feels very much like a Paramount tenor, just a bit chunkier, and the headstock mounts Champion-style friction pegs. This is definitely a professional grade banjo ukulele, fairly heavy, quite substantial-feeling, and loud enough to play with a band or orchestra.

Overall length is 23 1/4 in. (59.1 cm.), 8 1/8 in. (20.6 cm.) diameter head, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.).

Overall very nice condition, and all original except the two knurled nuts that once secured the resonator have been replaced with more modern screws. There is some fairly heavy finish wear, mostly to the resonator back and edges, and much less on the neck and rim.

The center seam of the resonator back plate has been resealed, and there is a light overfinish over this area. The plating is quite clean and shiny. There is a mark on the back of the headstock where it appears some sort of decal was removed. This is a great-playing and wonderful-sounding banjo uke and flashy as all get-out! Excellent - Condition.
Wm.
