In the early-mid 1930's Gibson, Martin and others built an number of styles fairly classy carved-top guitars without f-holes-descended directly from Orville Gibson's original designs. This Washburn \"Superb\" is a relatively late example, built by Regal for Tonk Brothers in 1936 and originally selling at $60.00. Regal made a very similar guitar under their own name in the early 1930's; this design overall is very similar to a Martin C-1. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe 4-ply bound top is carved and X-braced, while the the back is slightly arched with curved bracing. The oddest feature is a thick bar-fret ebony fingerboard, a high end touch on a mid-priced guitar. The neck is a typical 1930's medium \"V\" fairly wide at the nut. The Washburn name is inlaid in pearl in the headstock, tuners are individual Grover units with plastic buttons. This is quite a loud and responsive guitar with a tone (as one might expect) halfway between a traditional archtop and a flattop guitar.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOverall length is 40 1\/8 in. (101.9 cm.), 15 1\/4 in. (38.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1\/8 in. (10.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1\/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3\/4 in. (44 mm.). This guitar is structurally in fine shape, but has seen a fairly heavy clear overspray over the the entire instrument, with some edges buffed through again on the headstock and body. There are several repaired top cracks, well sealed up. All hardware and fittings are original. Neck angle is good and this is a good player, with a distinctive sound. Includes an old gig bad, likely 1960's Italian make.
