This is a relatively high-grade guitar for this maker, on par with the famous \"Leadbelly\" 12-string with many of the same features. The body is solid mahogany, with a spruce top bound in celluloid. The original ladder bracing is intact (many of these guitars have been re-braced with an X pattern, which substantially changes the sound). The top and soundhole are bound and bordered with the wide colored wood purfling that is a Stella trademark. The guitar has several other telltale Schmidt characteristics, including a slanted heelcap and squared-off kerfing under the top. The 26 1\/2\" neck is deep and chunky, with a typical slotted headstock and the original budget Waverly strip tuners. The sound is powerful with a lot of character. While not 100% original this is a good-playing example of this rare instrument.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOverall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 3\/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1\/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 26 1\/2 in. (673 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7\/8 in. (48 mm.). This lovely guitar has undergone some fairly major restoration but is an excellent playing and sounding instrument. The bridge is a very nice reproduction of the original pyramid piece, but with a slanted bone saddle in place of the original straight-mounted version. The long bridgeplate is original, but has a small re-inforcing patch added in the center area around the pins. All the bracing is original with an added canted lengthwise brace on each side of the soundhole. This is a standard preventive measure on these large-body Stellas, as this area of the top is often prone to distortion. The top has some typical rise behind the bridge but is very solid. The fingerboard has been refretted and re-dyed, and the nut is newer. The neck has been reset and there is some light overspray; overall the top finish appears all original with some light polish-out and some wear below the soundhole. There is some general wear, with scuffs and scratches mostly to the back but overall the finish is relatively well preserved for a piece of this age. The internal \"Stella-Fretted Instrument Manufacturers\" label appears to be a reproduction, but this is absolutely a Schmidt factory guitar. This is a rare and desirable pre-war large-body guitar, a fine example of the Jersey City factory's best work.
