The fancy Orpheum #3 was the top model in the numbered style series offered in the 1910's. Along with the oversize rim Brass Band model, this represents Rettberg \u0026amp; Lange's instrument craft at its finest. The #3 features fancy shaped abalone inlay in the fingerboard and on both sides of the headstock, wood binding, multiple contrasting wood laminations everywhere and an extra marquetry strip around the rim. This banjo is quite rare in a 5-string model; most extant examples of this style are tenors. A good player's example of a 1910's era top-quality large-rim banjo.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOverall length is 36 5\/16 in. (92.2 cm.), 12 5\/16 in. (31.3 cm.) diameter head, and 2 11\/16 in. (6.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 28 in. (711 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1\/4 in. (32 mm.). This banjo is well used and shows a decent amount of play wear and number of old repairs but it is still an excellent player's instrument. There is an old heel crack neatly repaired, and a clear overspray to the neck. There are several extra holes drilled in the dowel stick, for no readily apparent reason. The Planet tuners and no-knot tailpiece are modern replacements. The hooks and nuts are mostly older but a bit of a mixed bag, the frets are in very good shape. Set up with a skin head and recent bridge, this is an excellent playing and sounding banjo with a big ringing tone.
