lyon-healy-washburn-style-d-flat-top-acoustic-guitar-1923-8280
Lyon & Healy Washburn Style D Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1923)
Washburn Style D Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, made by Lyon & Healy, c. 1923, made in Chicago, serial # 725, natural finish, mahogany back, sides and neck; spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, period black chipboard case.

This lovely if unassuming little guitar was a product of Chicago's Lyon & Healy factory, and carries their premium Washburn brand. In the early 1920s Washburn did an aesthetic about-face; previously their guitars had been known for having very elaborate inlay and decoration, but the 1922 line was suddenly sleek and mostly unadorned. The Style "D" was the fourth model down the line and features a mahogany body and neck, good quality spruce top, and minimal decoration.

The unusual "Smile" bridge with delicately curved ends is a distinctive feature of this new line, as is the celluloid ring set around the sound hole edge. The spruce top is lightly built with canted ladder bracing, which is a particular Chicago trademark.

Despite its austere appearance, the Style D was a fairly expensive guitar in its time, retailing at $40. It is very well-made of high quality material and is a very delicate and responsive guitar, quite suitable for fingerpicking styles.

Overall length is 37 1/2 in. (95.2 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This is a lovely original guitar, in far better condition than most similar instruments we see. There are small dings and dents to the finish, mostly on the top, but not a lot of play wear. The only deep dent is an old case lid ding on the upper top. The guitar has a perfect repro of the original "smile" bridge and small patch over the (tiny) original bridgeplate, but is otherwise all original.

The frets were recently crowned and it plays extremely well. We recommend silk-and-steel strings for this very lightly built instrument, as with similar period Martins. A lovely example of this rare, nearly 100 year old guitar complete in a nice (possible original) period chipboard case. Excellent - Condition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/8702/3756/files/01_21c8f729-d56f-4c5c-a696-96909d45ae41.jpg?v=1774338272
