Violh Parlour Style Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1890)
Parlour Style Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, attributed to L. Violh, c. 1890, made in Flushing, Connecticut, shaded maple and natural varnish finish, burl maple back and sides, spruce top, Spanish cedar neck with rosewood fingerboard.

A very interesting and somewhat unusual American parlor guitar from the late 19th century. The back and sides are made of spectacularly figured burl maple, and the back has a prominent arch formed by shaped braces. The top is unbound with simple ring soundhole decoration while the back has a wide herringbone backstrip. The bridge has pyramid ends and a wire saddle, and the ebony pearl-dot pins appear original. The short headstock is reminiscent of the earlier Ashborn/New England style and bears the original 1880's bone-button tuners on the bass side, while the treble side appears to have been replaced in the 1890's! A very nicely preserved and extremely playable piece of 19th century American lutherie.

Overall length is 35 1/4 in. (89.5 cm.), 12 in. (30.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 23 1/4 in. (590 mm.). Width of nut is 1 15/16 in. (49 mm.).

Overall very original and in good playing condition; one spot of fingerwear on the top near the bridge, otherwise a very well cared for guitar of this time period. Excellent Condition.
L.
