kay-resophonic-guitar-1948-4391
Kay Resophonic Guitar (1948)
Kay Resophonic Guitar, c. 1948, made in Chicago, natural lacquer finish, laminated mahogany body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex soft shell case.

Here's one we've never seen before: a Kay resonator guitar from just after WWII. Kay had built the bodies and necks for many guitars in the National line before the war, so they were obviously familiar with the construction of them. The cone and coverplate on this guitar are not National products; they appear built by Kay to their own design.

The original 17-year design patent for the single cone National guitar expired in 1948; the Valco company appeared to have lost interest in this type of instrument by that time, so it is possible that Kay saw this as a marketing opportunity. Whatever the exact story, Kay appears to have given up the attempt rapidly, and this is one rare guitar!

Overall length is 41 3/4 in. (106 cm.), 15 1/2 in. (39.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 7/8 in. (9.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 3/4 in. (654 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

General finish wear but overall well-preserved; one area on the back of the (fairly deeply contoured) neck has been shaved down a bit behind the first five frets. Changed coverplate screws, added strap button at heel, and replaced tuner buttons; otherwise, original. Several small inexplicable small screw holes in headstock face. A cool, funky, and surprisingly well-made guitar. Generally Excellent Condition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/8702/3756/files/01_51224ac6-8098-49ff-a181-5d7579d14574.jpg?v=1774333666
