guild-m-20-flat-top-acoustic-guitar-1958-11455
Guild M-20 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1958)
Guild M-20 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1958), made in Hoboken, serial # 6075, dark mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.

This is a well-worn but great sounding Guild M-20, the company's least expensive guitar in the 1950's and 60's. Despite its original budget status this has become one of the company's most sought-after models in recent years. The M-20 is linked in the popular imagination to highly influential English singer/songwriter Nick Drake who was pictured, at least' with one on the cover of his "Bryter Layter" LP, so it is popularly linked to his legend. That connection notwithstanding the guitar itself has much to recommend it. A small body all-mahogany instrument, the M-20 has a different tonal character from any other Guild and excels particularly as a fingerpicking instrument. The neck is a round, slim C profile and very comfortable, somewhat in between typical Martin and Gibson spec.

This 1958 M-20 is an early model and lightly built, especially for a Guild! An 1950's gold script Guild logo is stenciled on the plain headstock above the small "teardrop" truss rod cover; the tuners are openback Waverly strips with plastic buttons. With a simple lightly sprayed finish, no binding and only the plainest inlay, this model has a very austere look but a typically well-rounded, surprisingly powerful and expansive sound. This late 1950s M-20 is much rarer than the typical 1960's model. This is a well played example, worn in but a perfect player with a particularly fine sound. Looking past its cosmetic scars it is a lovely little guitar, one of our most requested instruments.

Overall length is 38 3/4 in. (98.4 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 in. (10.2 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This guitar shows general wear overall, but remains original and unaltered except for typical maintenance repair to keep it playing well. The all-original finish shows a large and varied collection of dings, dents, and scuffs with some heavier wear to the edges and on the top into the wood above and below the pickguard. The finish on the back of the neck has dings, dents and capo wear and the headstock face has some noticeable flaking.

Considering its decades of use, the guitar appears remarkably crack-free except for a slight resealed separation of the top seam behind the bridge. The bridge itself has been cut down somewhat but maintains quite respectable height and does not appear to have ever lifted from the top; the bone saddle is newer. The tuners are the original Waverly strips, and a strap button has been added to the heel. The neck has been reset and the fingerboard planed and refretted, resulting in a truly excellent player. This is a fine sounding "real relic" and a nice gigging example of this plain but sought-after Guild.
