guild-d-25-flat-top-acoustic-guitar-1983-13816
Guild D-25 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1983)
Guild D-25 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1983), made in Westerly, RI, serial # DA112766, mahogany stain finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This early 1980s D-25 is not one of Guild's more romantic instruments, but a good workhorse flat top that will "Take a lickin' and keep on tickin'!" It represents Guild's second version of the D-25, a mahogany Dreadnought that remained in their catalogue from the late '60s with some changes through the closure of the Westerly plant. Unlike the first D-25 models, by 1983 the relatively low-budget guitar had gained a spruce top instead of mahogany, although it was still stained dark to match the rest of the body. It is stamped "June 20 1983" on the underside near the soundhole.

This 1983 D-25 is a "plain Jane" traditional Dreadnought built with a mahogany neck, sides and back, with a spruce top and rosewood fingerboard and bridge. As with most '80s Guild flattops the back is an arched laminate with no bracing. The cosmetic trim is minimal: a gold decal logo, Guild's typical tortoise pattern pickguard, five-ply top binding, single black binding on the back, an unbound fingerboard with Pearloid dots. The tuners are Guild-branded Schaller M6 individual units, an upgrade from cheap openbacks typically used on earlier D-25s. This was a fairly budget-priced Dreadnought when new, and remains a very solid, good playing guitar, known as '80s Guilds are as an excellent "road" instrument that will survive hard use when fancier guitars fold!

Overall length is 41 1/2 in. (105.4 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This very solidly built guitar remains all original showing some general wear overall but no major repair. The top in particular has some deeper dings, scratches scuffs and dents; the back has noticeable laminate checking and there are wear marks over the entire guitar. The bridge has been reglued but there are no cracks or other repairs visible, there are finish check lines to the top along the center seam and off the top edge of the pickguard but the wood has not opened into grain splits beneath. One of the Schaller tuners has lost its back cap but still works fine. The original frets show some wear in the lower positions but the guitar still plays well, complete in the original case with an old massive Hamilton capo included.
