gretsch-astro-jet-solid-body-electric-guitar-1963-4212
Gretsch Astro-Jet Solid Body Electric Guitar (1963)
Gretsch Astro-Jet Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1963), made in Brooklyn, NY, red and black laquer finish, mahogany body and neck, ebony fingerboard.

The Astro-Jet has gone down in guitar history as one of Gretsch's strangest creations; what is often overlooked is what a good-sounding guitar these can be! With a large, thin, eccentrically-shaped, sculpted-edge solid body in two-tone black and red finish, the Astro-Jet looks like no other guitar, then or now. The headstock is a particularly odd-looking blob shape with 4-and-2 tuner configuration and the pearl Gretsch logo just fitting in. Pickups are Gretsch's then-new Super 'Trons, with a 3-knob 3-switch wiring scheme that baffles most users instantly (it does make sense after a bit of fiddling).

The vibrato is the familiar Burns unit used on most Gretsch solidbodies of the era. While admittedly an eccentric-looking creation, the Astro-Jet is actually the company's best TRUE solid body of the 1960's -- the Corvettes were always budget guitars, and the other Jet series actually semi-hollow. Still waiting for its moment in the spotlight, the Astro-Jet remains one of the most distinctive guitars ever designed!

Overall length is 40 3/4 in. (103.5 cm.), 14 5/8 in. (37.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 in. (2.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This guitar has had a rather hard life, but remains a good player! Pickups, finish, and vibrato are original, with some unfortunate finish damage to the face apparently caused by baubles of some sort being glued on and then removed. The oft-missing logo/serial # plate on the body is intact. The wiring rig is a correct repro of the original using new pots and switches.

The bridge is Gretsch Space Control but with some re-working, and the vibrato handle is probably not original. Tuners have been restored to original Waverlys with some rather amateurish plug-and-fill work, which could be touched up to better effect. This is a good-playing and powerful-sounding, substantially original guitar with a particularly good neck angle for this model, which can be hard to find. A bit of a Brooklyn-born hard-luck orphan, this Astro-Jet needs a loving home!
