gibson-tg-00-flat-top-tenor-guitar-1936-13867
Gibson TG-00 Flat Top Tenor Guitar (1936)
Gibson TG-00 Model Flat Top Tenor Guitar (1936), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 1598-23, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black chipboard case.

The TG-00 is the tenor version of the L-00, and although these were Gibson's least expensive tenor guitar in the 1930s they generally have a big and powerful sound. The specs are the same as for the 6-string version, with the obvious exception of the narrow 4-string neck with tabbed Grover banjo tuners and the smaller bridge. This example appears not too much used since before WWII.

This example was likely built in late 1936 when the list price was $27.50 (the same as the 6-string version) not including the case. The top finish is a deep sunburst with a subdued orangey center, somewhat larger than the years before but not as bright as later 1930s guitars. There is single-ply white celluloid binding around the top edge, which is ornamented with a "firestripe" tortoise celluloid pickguard and a three-ply sound hole ring. The back and sides are finished in dark mahogany, as is the slim soft "V" profile neck with an unbound rosewood fingerboard. The headstock carries a white stenciled "Gibson" logo on the face and two-tab Grover banjo tuners.

This is a superb pre-WWII tenor guitar with a powerful tone deeper than some. Many of these pre-war Gibson flat-tops have been heavily used and often amateurishly repaired; this one has not seen too much use and has survived 90 or so years fully intact including the original soft shell case.
.

Overall length is 38 1/8 in. (96.8 cm.), 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 5/16 in. (11 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 22 5/8 in. (575 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/8 in. (29 mm.).

This old and nicely original Gibson tenor has seen some play, but survives in all original and not too much worn. The all-original finish shows some typical checking and there are small dings and dents scattered around. The top has a couple of deeper scrapes behind the bridge and a bit of pickwear to the lower rim of the soundhole. The back of the neck is very clean with hardly any wear.

The original rosewood bridge is intact and does not appear to have been reglued. The guitar plays well with an unusually deep, rich tone for a tenor and plenty of volume. This is not only one of the cleanest, but also one of the best-sounding Gibson 4-string guitars we have had in a while. The original chipboard case is included, also very nicely preserved with some original Black Diamond string envelopes for extra vibe!
