gibson-lg-2-34-flat-top-acoustic-guitar-1954-8301
Gibson LG-2 3/4 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1954)
Gibson LG-2 3/4 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1954), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # X7294-25, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, original brown alligator chipboard case.

Okay -- vintage Gibsons don't come much cuter than this! The diminutive 3/4 LG-2 is the Kalamazoo company's equivalent to Martin's Model 5-18 and although created for the burgeoning student market of the 1950s is still built to the standards of a fully professional quality guitar. It is a plain but sharp-looking guitar in the classic Gibson style with a small tortoise celluloid pickguard on a dark sunburst top, 3-ply celluloid white top and soundhole ornament and a simple gold Gibson logo on the headstock.

The narrow-waisted curvy body form was actually an older design, handed down from Gibson's late 1920s TG series tenor guitars. Oddly enough it is not similar at all to the broader-waist LG body design of the 1940s. While designated the LG-2 3/4, this model carries a ladder-braced top like the LG-1. Presumably Gibson decided a top this small didn't merit the full X-braced treatment, and certainly the sound does not seem to suffer.

Although originally student-priced, these diminutive instruments were made in far smaller numbers than their full-sized siblings; less than 300 of this model left the factory in 1954. Despite its small size, this is a great-playing guitar with a bright and very punchy sound and an interesting find for anyone who likes a small-bodied flat-top.

Overall length is 36 3/4 in. (93.3 cm.), 12 3/4 in. (32.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 15/16 in. (10 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 22 3/4 in. (578 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This is a super clean example, with very little wear to show for its nearly 65 years on earth. There are a few small dings and dents but overall the finish still shines like it did when Ike was in the White House. The top and back seams have been reglued, with a bit of touchup visible on the back. The neck has been seamlessly and nearly invisibly reset, and this is a superb playing guitar. Complete in its equally tiny alligator chipboard case; this is one of the nicest of these we have ever seen.
