gibson-lg-1-flat-top-acoustic-guitar-1955-9716
Gibson LG-1 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1955)
Gibson LG-1 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1955), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # W1714-35, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, molded black plastic hard shell case.

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This Gibson LG-1 was Gibson's budget flat top in the early 1950's, essentially the same as the LG-2 but with simpler ladder-bracing under the top instead of the more elaborate X-pattern. The materials and cosmetics are exactly the same, the only way to tell the difference is to peer into the back edge of the soundhole! The sound is usually somewhat brighter and less sophisticated, with something like a mix of Gibson and Stella characteristics. This is a generally well-preserved and nicely original 1955 guitar, showing some light wear and minor repair.

The dark sunburst top is still relatively shiny with minimal fade, showing a nice deep color in the center. There is some typical checking and a number of small dings, dents and scrapes but no heavy wear. The only crack to the top runs along the treble side of the fingerboard to the soundhole rim, solidly sealed up but visible. There are several repaired grain cracks to the back, all repaired with minimal touch up. The tuners are the original Kluson Deluxe strips with new repro buttons.

This mid-1950's LG-1 is an excellent player, with just some light wear to the original frets. The neck appears to have been neatly reset and the bridge is fairy low but appears original and unaltered, the saddle has been lowered and subtly compensated.

This was the last year for the earlier small-pickguard LG-1, generally considered superior to examples from later on in the decade. It has a fairly powerful but surprisingly sweet tone. It makes an excellent fingerstyle blues guitar and general strummer and would amplify well for stage use in a variety of styles. This one is ready to gig with a nice low action and includes a good molded plastic modern HSC.
