gibson-les-paul-custom-solid-body-electric-guitar-2023-13410
Gibson Les Paul Custom Solid Body Electric Guitar (2023)
Gibson Les Paul Custom Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (2023), made in Nashville, TN, serial # 305948, black lacquer finish, mahogany body with maple cap; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

One of the all-time most sought-after later '60s Gibsons, the original 1968 Les Paul Custom has developed a mystique all its own. This gleaming black-and-gold beauty was arguably the biggest success story to come out of Kalamazoo after the departure of Ted McCarty, and remains an enduring classic today. This Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab rendition was signed off on the COA on 12-11-23 so has only been around less than two years, but does succeed in feeling line a much older instrument.

This black beauty replicates the original 1968 Custom reissue quite accurately. The distinguishing feature is a mahogany with a maple cap; the '50s original mahogany-bodied Customs did not feature the maple top, something Les Paul himself called a "mistake". The knobs are another distinguishing feature; "witch-hat" black plastic pieces with a gold cap. Perhaps the most crucial feature is mounting two Humbucking pickups instead of the three PAFs used in the late 1950s. This was another change most considered to be for the better; indeed, over the years some players have come to regard the 1968 Custom a tonally superior instrument to its 1958-60 ancestor, due to the brighter maple capped body and the absence of the in-the-way (to many) third middle pickup and its attendant out-of-phase wiring. The hardware is all gold-plated like the original, giving a really striking look over the ebony finish just as Les intended. As the relatively rare originals have continued to rise in value, this "Custom Shop '68 Custom" is a welcome addition to Gibson's detailed re-issue line.

Overall length is 39 1/4 in. (99.7 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 in. (5.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.)., 9.43 lbs.

This guitar appears practically new, showing a few handling marks and that's about it. The Murphy Lab "Ultra Light Aging" is mostly confined to finish checking so there is some simulated wear, but that's the idea anyway. This is a fine player and feels very close to its original 1968 inspiration, of which we have had several over the years. It resides in the original HSC with the Gibson Custom shop paperwork included.
