gibson-l-7-arch-top-acoustic-guitar-1935-5862
Gibson L-7 Arch Top Acoustic Guitar (1935)
Gibson L-7 Model Arch Top Acoustic Guitar (1935), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, maple back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, brown hard shell case.

A very attractive pre-war Gibson archtop, the 16" L-7 was initially the least expensive of the new line of F-hole professional orchestra guitars introduced in the early '30's but still a substantial professional grade instrument. This 1935 guitar features "Nick Lucas" style shaped pearl fingerboard inlay, a bound headstock with the script Gibson logo and fleur-de-lys inlay and a single bound body with a sunburst top. This is a smooth and powerful sounding swing-era guitar with a surprisingly deep and resonant tone-a very nice 16" carved top Gibson at a fraction of the cost of a period L-5.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). This guitar is well worn overall but a very good player. There are numerous scratches and scuffs, mostly to the top, with some small areas of touch-up but no general overspray. The rest of the finish is somewhat cleaner, with light wear overall. There is an old repair to the back/rim joint below the tailpiece that is solid but not mated up as well as it might have been-the side bulges out a bit and there are two gaps in the binding. The tuners are modern repros, the other hardware is original-the pickguard is included but is in a fairly advanced state of celluliod decay, so is not useable. The guitar has been refretted expertly some time back and the frets have very little wear, there are a few old divots to the board but nothing major. This is an excellent sounding guitar with plenty of power but not strident; a fone player's pre-war 16" archtop with a good plated-in vibe. Includes a period HSC.
