gibson-j-35-flat-top-acoustic-guitar-1939-5948
Gibson J-35 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1939)
Gibson J-35 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1939), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # EG-4188, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

We love the original Gibson J-35 in any form; this 1939 example is one sweet playing and sounding prewar Gibson Jumbo! Built around mid-1939 this is a late example of an "early" style J-35 with the dark sunburst top that would soon be largly supplanted by a natural top finish option first cataloged that year. The neck is fairly slim but still carries the 1930's V profile with a large heel, which was also replaced within a few months with an even slimmer "C" neck. Other original features include the "firestripe" tortoise celluloid pickguard and silkscreen white script Gibson logo. The tuners are period Kluson strip units but likely not original to this instrument.

The J-35 was Gibson's "working man's" Jumbo flattop in the 1930's and early '40's. Selling on introduction for under forty dollars it was intended as a direct competitor to Martin's D-18, and has since been similarly recognized as one of the all time classic flat-top designs. This is a guitar to be reckoned with, extremely light and very responsive-a good flatpicker and a very nice fingerpicking guitar as well. This particular J-35 has a fairly dry and very even sound, and would make an excellent recording or performance guitar.

Overall length is 40 3/8 in. (102.6 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/8 in. (12.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). This guitar has been well played and shows general wear overall, with a number of old repairs but no ongoing issues. There are sealed cracks to the top in several areas; on the treble side of the fingerboard, in the typical spot on the top edge of the pickguard, and on both sides of the bridge. There is an area of several closely-placed repaired cracks on the lower treble side that has been touched up more heavily. All are solidly repaired with minimal touch-up; there is a light overspray on the lower side and possibly the back; the entire guitar has been polished out so is a bit shinier than usual for this period. The bridge and bridgeplate are original-the bridge has been lowered slightly, and the saddle is original. Playability is excellent, this is a great and very useable example of a pre-war Gibson Jumbo. Excellent - Condition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/8702/3756/files/01_6d59cd53-cabf-414f-96a2-efebc04837a3.jpg?v=1774329033
