This guitar was built when the 175 was already a very successful design, having found immediate acceptance with players for its combination of great sound and playability at a moderate price. The sunburst laminated body is triple bound on the front and single bound on the back, the neck is single bound with split parallelogram fingerboard inlays. The headstock carries the pearl Gibson logo and crown inlay and Kluson Deluxe tuners with "keystone' buttons.

The original hardware includes the single P-90 pickup with a black plastic cover and numbered "hatbox" knobs. The standard Gibson rosewood adjustable bridge is mated to the earlier cast L-7 style tailpiece. The white Gibson label under the bass F-hole originally bore an "Artist" serial number; this has been blacked out at some point but the stamped factory order number is clearly visible dating the guitar to around mid-1953. This particular style of ES-175 used by far too many Jazz guitar greats to count; in the 1950's and '60's Herb Ellis especially is often pictured with a guitar virtually identical to this one.

Overall length is 40 1/2 in. (102.9 cm.), 16 1/8 in. (41 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Overall this guitar is nicely original and well preserved- on the whole fairly clean for a 1950's instrument! The finish shows some small dings and chips (most notably on the headstock edges) and some light checking-there is heavier wear to the back of the neck that has been smoothed down but not finished over. The rim shows an old typical jack repair, very solidly done with a neatly faired in patch to the side that is not easily visible-it was finished over with an excellent color match likely some time ago. There is an older refret, with slightly heavier wire than original 1950's style but well done. Someone engraved their Texas liscense number in small digits at the top rear of the headstock. The pickguard is missing but all other original hardware is intact. An excellent player, complete with a fairly well worn period hard case. Excellent - Condition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/8702/3756/files/01_860dfcc9-2522-40a5-90d0-f8d4f5f50ddc.jpg?v=1774329997
