This guitar features a triple bound natural-finish spruce top with an adjustable saddle rosewood belly pin bridge. This example represents the earliest and best-sounding variant of the model, as Gibson quickly went to a pinless bridge and tailpiece design for these guitars, which reduced the . Big tortoise celluloid pickguard, nice comfortable chunky mahogany neck with unbound dot-inlay rosewood fingerboard. The tuners are enclosed Kluson Deluxe strip units with plastic buttons. Plays and sounds very well, these smaller-body 12-strings guitars have an lush open strummed sound that recalls 1960's pop-folk records by groups like the Seekers or the Silkie. Even Johnny Cash had one for awhile in the "folk" era!

Overall length is 42 in. (106.7 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 2 in. (51 mm.). All original and well preserved overall. There is some light finish wear (most nortably to the soundhole edge) and dings but no cracks or repairs. The only alteration is the original "Top Tensioner" unit that was mounted under the bridge has been removed-this screw-adjusted plate was designed to press the top upwards in front of the bridge, but in practice acts as a giant damper removing nearly all tone from the guitar! This was used by Gibson in the mid-60's as a dealer-adjustable safeguard for troublesome models (like J-200's and 12-strings) but nearly all have been removed by now, as they add nothing to the guitar except a lot of weight! This 12-string shows some slight top arching behind the bridge, actually less than we often see on this model. The bridge has never been off and the guitar is fully stable. Plays perfectly and sounds like it should, with a warm jangle and sweet midrange.
