The neck is marked 6-61 in pencil, the special two-on-one pots are somewhat earlier (stamped 25th week of 1960). This bass has all the hallmarks the characteristic of the '61 'stack-knob' including (under the tailpiece cover) the individual string mutes and outside metal grounding strip. The clay dot, slab rosewood fingerboard neck is exquisitely comfortable.

The lightweight alder body carries a fairly well faded sunburst finish; it actually looks almost like a 1957 two-tone. The pickguard is a very light and attractive tortoise celluloid, typical of this period. Perfectly balanced, this Jazz Bass has a very well defined, singing sound with plenty of character. This is one of the finest Fender basses we have had in a long time and carries a serious vibe for any Jaco fan, bass player or classic Fender bass connoisseur.

Overall length is 46 in. (116.8 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/2 in. (38 mm.). This bass is very nice overall; an exceptionally fine playing instrument that really shows why these have been considered the cream of all Fender basses for many years now. This is a played but well-preserved example, with general wear overall but no major areas of finish loss or overspray. The body edges have typical wear but the face has only some small dings and a couple of old tape marks near the tailpiece cover. There is some finish disturbance likely from contact with an old vinyl strap on the back edge of the body.
The back of the bass is relatively clean except for one belt buckle spot. There is also some small old "strap burn" on the back of the neck around the 7th fret area, and a scrape behind the 4th-otherwise the neck finish is quite well preserved. The headstock decal has flaked a bit, noticeably on the "F" on Fender. Original frets are in excellent shape-this must have been played with flatwound strings for most of its life. The electronics are original except for a perfect relic rewind on the treble pickup by the esteemed pickup wizard Tom Brantley; this is so expertly done it is practically invisible, including relic-style solder joints. All hardware is original except the mounting screws for the forward pickup cover; the individual mutes are included but not mounted. Also includes a very fine original Brown HSC.
