The serial number dates this guitar to 1964, the year after these guitars we re-designed in a more Fender-like manner. The earlier double sided headstock was replaced with a single sided style often referred to as the \"batwing\", and the body's lower cutaway horn was shortened resulting in a asymmetrical profile. The finish on this particular instrument is a rare catalog variant Epiphone called \"Red Fox\" that features a lighter colored grain fill to the mahogany under a tinted cherry overcoat. The result is an unusual look with the yellowish grain standing out from the darker mahogany background. It was not particularly popular when new, and despite Epiphone's marketing efforts faded from use after a few years. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis guitar has an all-original finish but the hardware has seen a couple of modifications-the vibrato is removed and the guitar set up with a more recent Gibson stop tailpiece and a more substantial Tune-O-Matic bridge. The knobs are re-issue 1960's metal-capped Gibson style. With a great slim neck, very strong mini-humbucking pickups and the non-vibrato setup this guitar is a great player, with a searing sound when cranked.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOverall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3\/8 in. (3.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3\/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5\/8 in. (41 mm.). Very nice overall and original except for the hardware modifications noted above. A very strong player with some cosmetic wear, but no damage or notable repair. A recent correct-style refret makes this a great player, a super cool gigging guitar.
