He tried no shortage of unconventional consumer and audio electronics in his quest for tone, and this Electro-Voice Model 1000 Speech Clipper is one of those experiments he used in his studio. It is meant as a vocal compression tool for studio use mostly in radio or amateur studios (it was a fairly inexpensive and accessible tool) to \"clip\" the searing peaks of a voice and give it a little boost without blowing out the output signal, and Tom found it still worked to the same ends on the other side of a DI'd or reamped electric guitar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMr. Verlaine was also a known collector and obsessive about vacuum tubes, notably having an entire storage unit at one time filled with thousands of vintage tubes he would hand select for their tonal qualities in his different amps and effects; the last tube he (no doubt meticulously) selected for use remains in this serviced preamp. There is also a custom power supply built for the unit.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHeight is 10 in. (25.4 cm.), 2 1\/2 in. (6.4 cm.) width, and 3 5\/8 in. (9.2 cm.) in depth at deepest point. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis preamp is fully functional either for its intended use with a vocal microphone and recording equipment or for Verlaine's use with his guitar. It has been recapped and is healthy and safe for use in 2026, but we still suggest care when handling. It comes in its original box with the original paper instruction and data booklet from Electro-Voice in addition to an empty envelope labeled for \"Tom\" inside. There is a dedicated power source included as well that runs off a standard IEC cable. It also comes with a letter of authenticity signed by Patrick Derivaz, Verlaine's close friend and long time musical collaborator from whom we received the pedal.
