dobro-dw90ctn-resophonic-guitar-2001-12409
Dobro DW90CTN Resophonic Guitar (2001)
Dobro DW90CTN Model Resophonic Guitar (2001), made in Nashville, TN, serial # D1051810, natural lacquer finish, laminated maple body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This is a fairly obscure model from the flagship days of Gibson's ownership of the Dobro brand, which they acquired in 1993 then moved to Nashville in 1997-8. The DW-90 was a fairly high end model, in this case with the added feature of a cutaway so definitely designed for Spanish (not lap) style play. The instrument is built with some very lovely flame maple on both body and neck, and looks rather like a showpiece.

The instrument is built around a standard Dobro cone/coverplate and has a single rakish f-hole on the bass side of the top, with a treble side cutaway in place of the lower. The flame maple neck has an unbound rosewood fingerboard and is much slimmer than pre-war style Dobro standard, definitely aimed at modern players. This guitar really excels at hybrid standard/slide playing in the Delta blues mode and has a deeper but ballsier sound than many modern resonator instruments. Gibson is not currently building anything like this anymore and they didn't make a lot of them when they were!

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This guitar shows signs of light wear and play but no damage or repair. The finish has some minor scuffing overall with a few deeper scratches on the lower back. There is what appears to be a factory-filled flaw in the fingerboard at the 8th fret. The coverplate has some scuffing to the plating and light accumulated funk around the screws spots; the instrument was living in New Orleans humidity until recently. The action is low at the nut and a bit higher (4/32") at the 12th fret, optimally set up for a Spanish/slide hybrid style. This cool if fairly obscure piece of Gibson/Dobro history lives in the original case with some original Gibson paperwork included.
