With an output of 25 watts, the "Maestro" fell in the middle of Danelectro's 1958 Series D lineup, which ranged from the tiny 10 watt "Leader" up to the famous 30 watt "Challenger" and the monstrous (for the time) 50 watt "Twin-Twelve". This example is labeled as an "Artist" but is the same model. Like the Challenger and the Twin-Twelve, the Maestro features a preamp section mounted with the controls above the 12" heavy duty speaker with the power section featuring two 6L6 tubes at the base of the cabinet below.

The cabinet itself is covered in a white textured material with rounded corners on the face and a recessed front gill covered in gold-tinted basketweave cloth. A clear "Danelectro" logo plate is mounted on the thin panel above. The back panel is two-tone brown and silver with two channel sections, each with three inputs, treble and bass knobs. A separate section on the left has Vibrato speed and strength controls and a jack to plug the foot switch into.

Height is 18 in. (45.7 cm.), 22 in. (55.9 cm.) width, and 9 1/4 in. (23.5 cm.) deep.

Cosmetically, the amp is quite clean and well-preserved, especially considering the fairly fragile Masonite cabinet design. The cream tolex covering is remarkably well-preserved with only minor scuffing and dings around the corners and edges of the cabinet. There has been some past professional restoration work on the top of the cabinet, with parts of the covering repainted though this is nearly unnoticeable to the untrained eye. The handle is a brown leather Fender-style replacement added at a later date though the handle lugs themselves are original.

The gold grille cloth is beautifully preserved, taut and free of any holes or signs of tearing. The rear control panel is remarkably clean and mostly untarnished with all lettering crisp and intact save for a single blemish below the treble control. All the brown radio-style knobs are original. The baffle has been acoustically checked and foam dampeners installed to eliminate the bass-range buzzing issues these amps are known for.

Electrically, the amp is in beautiful working order. The 12" alnico Utah speaker is original and is marked 328819, dating it to the 19th week of 1958. It has been reconed by our in-house specialist and sounds fabulous. Both transformers also appear to be original. The amp has been fully refurbished by our in-house professionals, a grounded 3-prong power cable installed, electrolytic and leaking paper-in-oil capacitors replaced and all other components thoroughly tested, all sockets, pots and jacks cleaned and the 6L6 output tubes biased to spec.

Somewhat darker sounding than the typical Fender, this amp swells into rich overdrive fairly easily and turns into a snarling monster when pushed. This mid-sized perfect mate for a 1950s Danelectro U-2, or any cool and funky 1950s single-coil guitar. Included with the amp are the original tremolo pedal and a perfectly preserved vintage sales one-sheet brochure in a protective sleeve featuring the Danelectro Series D line.
