It is built with a seasoned red spruce top and premium quilted maple back, sides and neck. This fairly early example was handmade in 2003, when Collings' mandolin production was just getting seriously under way. Modeled on Gibson's semi-mythical A-5 (Lloyd Loar had one built as a test for himself) this is an A style model with F holes sporting a lovely Cremona Brown nitrocellulose lacquer sunburst finish all over. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe figured maple neck has a soft V profile with an ebony fretboard; there is triple ivoroid binding with a side line on body and neck and a single bound, pearl inlaid headstock. The instrument is equipped with a Loar-era style adjustable ebony bridge, gold tuners and Collings' own tailpiece. This is one of the company's best 8-string offerings, an excellent playing and sounding instrument with a lot of style at a lower price than their comparable sounding F-body models.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOverall length is 27 in. (68.6 cm.), 10 in. (25.4 cm.) across at the widest point, and 1 13\/16 in. (4.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 13 7\/8 in. (352 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1\/8 in. (29 mm.). \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis MT2 is very clean but has aged in nicely over the years, with light handling marks but free of any really noticeable wear. There are no major dings, cracks or playability issues, even the frets show virtually no wear. It has been played but never abused with a lovely powerful but still warm sound.
