c-f-martin-ditson-style-2-soprano-ukulele-1923-3608
C. F. Martin Ditson Style 2 Soprano Ukulele (1923)
Ditson Style 2 Model Soprano Ukulele, made by C. F. Martin, c. 1923, made in Nazareth, PA, natural varnish finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard.

"Ditson" branded ukuleles were made for a limited time in the late 'teens and early 20's by Martin for the Oliver Ditson Company, the large music store and publishing concern based in Boston and New York. This is a "Ditson Stamp" example, with the standard Martin body shape but marked exclusively for Ditson, with no Martin stamp. Many of the ukes supplied to Ditson were built in the wide-waisted "Baby Dreadnought" shape, but this uke is built to Martin's standard pattern.

This Style 2 would have been built around 1923-4 when the early and fairly short-lived "can"-shaped Grover friction tuners seen on this uke were in use. The "Oliver Ditson Co., Boston, New York" stamp is visible on the back of the headstock and in the soundhole. Body and neck are of all mahogany construction with triple white celluloid binding on top and single binding on the back, rosewood fingerboard with small dot inlay, ebony nut and saddle, and 6-ply wooden soundhole ring. A nice example of an interesting Martin uke; the Style 2 in general is fairly rare and Ditson examples are not often seen.

Overall length is 20 7/8 in. (53 cm.), 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 5/16 in. (5.9 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 1/2 in. (343 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.).

Generally very nice and all original; there are several tightly-closed top and back cracks and some noticeable scuffing to the back. Top is cleaner with some scratches to the bridge area but very little strum wear. The original owner's initials (or fraternity affiliation) is neatly incised into the back of the neck at the base of the headstock and filled with gold paint. A good-sounding and playing 1920's Martin. Very Good + Condition.
C. F.
